Ashley Nicole Dent (SV class 2008) was lost to her family, friends, and teammates in a tragic automobile accident in August 2006. Ashley was a talented soccer player, a great student, a wonderful young lady, and a fine daughter, teammate, and\or friend to all who knew her.  She was proud to be a Viking, and we will always be proud to call her one of our own.  Ashley has also left a legacy that will remain with the local community.  In her honor, several scholarships are awarded annually to deserving students and athletes, and a memorial foundation has been established in her name to support these scholarships.

We continue to honor Ashley Nicole Dent through memorial games, awards, and scholarships. The Ashley Nicole Dent Memorial Soccer Game is played each year between the Spring Valley and Irmo girls’ soccer teams. Former Irmo Coach Mike Mauldin and his 2007 team initiated the idea of this annual memorial event. The two schools will take turns hosting the event.

The Spring Valley Viking Cup Ashley Nicole Dent Senior MVP Memorial Scholarship ($1,000, funded by the Ashley Nicole Dent Foundation) is awarded in her honor and memory. The Viking Cup recognizes the tournament's Senior MVP each year via a scholarship to her chosen college or university. The Senior Tournament MVP is selected from among the Bracket Champions only (teams advancing to play on Sunday). Overall performance, performance on Sunday, and overall contributions to team success are among the factors considered for selection.

The Ashley Nicole Dent Memorial Scholarship Award is given each year to a current South Carolina United FC soccer player on the club's U15 Select teams who "exhibit an unyielding determination to achieve excellence in the classroom, to obtain success on the soccer field and to foster genuine love, support and friendship amongst his and her teammates, coaches and club leadership." The recipients will have their club fees, training fees and administrative fees paid by the club in Ashley’s memory the following year.

Ashley Nicole Dent Viking Pride Memorial Scholarship is a $2,000 scholarship funded by the Ashley Niclole Dent Memorial Foundation. It is awarded to a deserving senior or junior Spring Valley varsity girls’ soccer player.  The selected player will exemplify the characteristics that tend to set the ultimate team player apart from her teammates.  Athletic talent is not a variable that is considered, and the player may or may not be a top player on the team.  The selection is based exclusively on the mental and physical efforts that the player puts into being the best player she can be and helping to make the team the best it can be.
